• Vocalising along to songs

  • Respond to their name by looking at the speaker

  • Develop functional gestures such as waving and pointing

  • May say a few single words

  • Make sounds/vocalisations to get an adults attention, and babble to people and toys

  • Demonstrate understanding of words such as ‘up’ and ‘bye bye’

Your role as communication partner:

 

  • Simple Language – there is no need to use ‘baby-talk.’  Use simple language to talk about the here and now

  • The Power of Everyday – repeating words whilst carrying out everyday activities such as nappy changing introduces new vocabulary

  • Singing – singing songs with actions provides opportunity for repetition of words and allows baby to join in.
