2.5 Years​

  • May have up to 500 words in their vocabulary

  • Understand instructions with 2 key words ‘get a teddy and a dolly'

  • May use 2-3 word sentences “mummy get book”

Your role as communication partner:


  • Model – some adults may not understand the child all the time.  Just repeat words back correctly, for example, child says “Daddy tar”, you say “yes, that’s Daddy’s car"

  • Reading – be comfortable looking through books and talking about what the child is interested in.  It doesn’t matter if the child misses pages out

  • Interpret – if the child says one word, interpret what they mean and extend, for example, child says “out” whilst looking outside, you say “want to go outside”
